Manage Your Running Athlete With Confidence

The Running Athlete hybrid course (online + face to face) provides you with the tools to manage your running patients. During the hybrid course you will gain a detailed understanding of running biomechanics, motor recruitment, injury risks, the influence of speed and the implications of terrain. In addition, you will be provided with a framework for completing clinical running assessments, discuss treatment and rehabilitation strategies and a process to develop individualised strength and conditioning programs to support your running patients.

Format: This course is delivered in a hybrid format. Consisting of over 9 hours of online modules followed by a face to face, practical session. To conclude the course an online Q&A online session will also be available. Course participants receive a PDF workbook and 3 month access to the online content.

This hybrid course is suitable for all health professionals routinely involved in the management of running athletes. This includes new and recent graduates, through to the experienced clinician looking to refresh their approach.

Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of The Running Athlete participants will be able to: 

  • Understand the important biomechanical components of running and the risk factors associated with injured runners. 

  • Understand the role of strength training in both reducing injury risk in runners and improving performance

  • Describe the key factors in performing a best practice clinical assessment and video analysis of a running athlete

  • Effectively demonstrate, coach and analyse the performance of a range of strength training exercises suitable for a running athlete. 

  • Design a concise, clinically reasoned return to running and strength training program addressing specific performance goals.

Course Presenters

Kevin Lieberthal 

B.Physio (Hons) M.ExSci (Research) Running Physiotherapist

After completing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at The University of Melbourne in 2001, I have had a significant change in my sporting involvement. After countless years running around most of Melbourne's squash courts, I switched to triathlon and then to marathon and ultra-marathon running. 

My clinical interests include: sporting injuries, running injuries (including analysing running biomechanics), lower limb injuries, tendon injuries, strength testing. Additionally, I have developed a customised Smith Machine to help monitor and assess the strength of individuals managed within Physio@Central Park. 

As my passion for running grew, memories of watching Bruce Fordyce winning the Comrades Marathon enticed me to travel to South Africa to complete the gruelling 89km's of hills. Thus far I have completed numerous marathons and ultramarthons (Melbourne x6, Canberra x3 (including 1 x50km), Gold Coast, Berlin, Roller Coaster, Frankston to Portsea x2, Comrades x 2 (up and down)). My first comrades was the "down run"in 2009 and I recently followed it up with the "up run" in 2017. 

I have completed studying a Research Masters in Exercise Science with the primary focus on the impact of Achilles Tendinopathy on lower limb function. Consequently, I have been fortunate to have presented some of my research on Achilles tendon pathology at the 2014 and 2016 SMA (Sports Medicine Australia) Conferences as well as presenting both lectures and running biomechanics workshops to other physiotherapists through the SPA (Sports Physiotherapy Australia group). 

When not running out on the streets, I have two young young children that I run after.

John Contreras

B.Physio (Hons) B.Sc M.ExSci (S&C) M.Sports Physio

John is an APA Sports Physiotherapists who graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2001. He completed a Master of Exercise Science (Strength & Conditioning) in 2011 from Edith Cowan University and a Master of Sports Physiotherapy from Latrobe University in 2016.

John has a special interest in designing injury prevention and sports performance gym programs for athletic patients following lower limb and spinal injuries. He also has over 13 years experience teaching Physiotherapy based Pilates, Strength Training and exercise rehabilitation courses to health professionals across Australia, the UK, Europe, Brazil and the USA. He is also a former Master Trainer the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI).

Using his experience combining Physiotherapy, Strength & Conditioning and Pilates training principles, and with a desire to assist other health professionals deliver exercise therapy with a strong evidence base, John launched Resistance Training Rehabilitation (RTR) in 2012.

John has previously worked with Football Federation Victoria (FFV) state squads, Brentford Football Club (UK), the Victorian Bushrangers, Collegians FC (VAFA Premier) and various triathlon teams. He currently has an interest in providing gym based rehabilitation programs and assisting the athletic development of young and adolescent athletes.

John is currently based in Melbourne consulting from Physiosports Brighton.
